The 400 Most Used Hebrew Words

This thread will be a long study about the 400 most used Hebrew Words in the Tanach.

When I first started studying Hebrew I bought a program that happened to have a list of the 400 most used Hebrew Words in the Tanach.

This list was SO helpful to me in learning to read Hebrew. By just learning the few words in this list and the many ways those words change according to how they are used, I was able to quickly BEGIN to actually READ my Stone Edition Chumash.

So my prayer is that this study will help someone else while also helping me to become more disiplined in my own studies.

Let's get started with The most frequently used word in the Hebrew Bible.

Number 1

The most frequently used word in the Tanach is:

י * ה * ו * ה

I have placed a * between the letters so as not to actually spell out this word.

This is THE NAME, HaShem.

This word appears over 6,800 times in the Hebrew text.

Genesis / Bereishit 2:4 is the first time this word is written.

With all the other words, I will give the accepted meaning(s), but with this word I will not.

Number 2

עַל = al

This word occurs 5,681 times in the Tanach.

ע this is the letter Ayin it has no sound.

The mark below the Ayin is the Hebrew vowel point PATAH - עַ it gives the Ayin a short "aw" sound.

ל This is the letter Lamad it sounds like the English L

עַל - on, upon, over; about, concerning.

Genesis / Bereishit 1:2 Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon ( עַל ) the face of the deep;

Number 3

אֲשֶׁר = asher

ע this is the letter Alef it has no sound.

The mark below the Alef is the Hebrew vowel point HATAF PATAH - אֲ it gives the Alef an "aw" sound.

שׁ this is the letter Shin it's sound is "sh" as in SHow.

The mark below the Shin is the Hebrew vowel point SEGOL - שֶׁ it sounds like the "ay" in the English "Bay" it is usually tranliterated with the English "E".

ר This is the letter Resh it sounds like the English R

אֲשֶׁר - who; which; that

Psalms / Tehillim 66:20 Blessed be God, who ( אֲשֶׁר ) hath not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me.

Genesis / Bereishit 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which ( אֲשֶׁר ) were under the firmament from the waters which ( אֲשֶׁר ) were above the firmament; and it was so.

Psalms / Tehillim 1:1 Happy is the man that ( אֲשֶׁר ) hath not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the scornful.

Number 4

אֶל = el

"el" occurs 5,446 times in the Tanach.

א this is the letter Alef it has no sound.

The mark below the Alef is the Hebrew vowel point SEGOL - אֶ it gives the Alef an "ay" sound. Translit as E.

ל this is the letter LAMED it's sound is "L".

אֶל - to, towards, for

Genesis / Bereishit 3:9 And the LORD God called unto ( אֶל ) the man, and said unto him: ‘Where art thou?’

Number 5

This is our first VERB, and as everyone who has learned a foreign language knows, verbs are a lot more difficult than other words.

אָמַר = amar

"amar" occurs 5,308 times in the Tanach.

The mark below the Alef is the Hebrew vowel point QAMATS - אָ it gives the Alef an "aw" sound. QAMATS is written in English as A.

The mark below the Mem is the Hebrew vowel point PATAH - מַ it gives the Mem an "aw" sound. PATAH is written in English as A.

ר this is the letter RESH it's sound is "R".

אָמַר - Amar is a verb - to say

All Hebrew verbs have many different conjegations. The following is not all of them by a long shot, but it will give you an idea of what AMAR looks like in action.

אָמַרְתִּי = a-mar-ti - I have said

אֺמַר = o-mar - I will say

אָמַרְתָּ = a-mar-ta - you (male) have said

תֺּאמַר = to-mar - you (male) will say

יֺאמַר = yo-mar - he will say

אָמַרְנוּ = a-mar-nu - we said

נֺאמַר = no-mar - we will say

אָמְרוּ = am-ru - they said

וַיֺּאמֶר = va-yo-mer - And God said let there be light.

"And he said" in Hebrew is va-yo-mer.

Look it's our friend the letter VAV - ו - in front of a word. Remember vav means "and" in English.

Number 7

The next word is really a series of words built on the letters:
בּ = Beyt
and נ = Nun

The letter Nun has a final (end of word) form that looks like this: ן = Final Nun

Number 7 is all about Son's and Children

בֵּן = ben = son

"ben", in it's various forms, occurs 4,906 times in the Tanach.

Here are some the forms of ben :

בֶּן = ben = son of

בְּנוֹ = be-no = his son

בָּנִים = ba-nym = sons (more than one)

בְּנֵי = b'-ney = children (of Israel)

Here's something neat about Hebrew. A related verb is בָּנָה = ba-nah = to build.

Hebrew is mostly built from 3 Letter Root Words which are called "Shoresh". Words which share the same "Shoresh" have some idea or action in common.

Because families of words are clearly related by the 3 Letter Root they share, these many word relationships are completely lost when Hebrew is translated.

Number 8

כִּי = kiy - say this like English "key".

"kiy" occurs 4,454 times in the Tanach.

כּ this is the letter Kaf

The mark below the Kaf is the Hebrew vowel point HIRIQ - כִּ it gives the Kaf an "ee" sound. HIRIQ is written in English as i.

י this is the letter - YOD - it's sound is "Y".

כִּי - that, for, because

Genesis / Bereishit 1:4 And God saw the light, that ( כִּי ) it was good . . .

Genesis / Bereishit 2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for ( כִּי ) in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.’

Genesis / Bereishit 2:23 And the man said: ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because ( כִּי ) she was taken out of Man.’

I've made my first BIG mistake. The following word should have appeared before AMAR. Instead of Number 9 it should be Number 5. Sorry.

Number 9

כֺּל = kol - say this like English "coal".

"kol" occurs 5,406 times in the Tanach.

The mark beside the Kaf is the Hebrew vowel point HOLAM - כֺּ it gives the Kaf an "oh" sound. HOLAM is written in English as o.

The mark below the Yod is the Hebrew vowel point QAMATS - יָ it gives the Yod an "aw" sound. QAMATS is written in English as A.

הָיָה = hayah is a verb to be, was, to become, come to pass

All Hebrew verbs have many different conjegations. The following is not all of them for Hayah.

וְהָיִיתִי = v'-ha-yi-ti = and I will continue to be.

Genesis 17:8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be ( וְהָיִיתִי = v'-ha-yi-ti ) their God.’

אֶהְיֶה = ey-hyeh = I will be.

Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses: ‘I AM ( אהיה= ey-hyeh ) THAT ( אשר = asher ) I AM’; ( אהיה= ey-hyeh )

This could be I AM what I AM, or I SHALL BE who I SHALL BE. Go back and look at the word Asher.

Genesis 1:3 And God said: ‘Let there be ( יהי = y'-hi ) light.’ And there was ( ויהי = va-y'-hi ) light.

You were ( הָיִיתָ = ha-yi-ta )

You will be ( תִּהְיֶה = ti-hyeh )

We were ( הָיִינוּ = ha-yi-nu )

Genesis 1:15 and let them be ( וְהָיוּ = v'-ha-yu ) for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth.’ And it was ( וָיְהִי = va-y'-hi ) so.
